Division interlocking and communication systems

Within the scope of its activities, the Division interlocking and communication systems, focuses mainly on providing and performing expert measurements, diagnostics, inspection of functional characteristics and other technical assistance on the equipment of interlocking and communication systems. All activities are performed both for our internal customers within ŽSR, and for external customers outside ŽSR.

Department diagnostics interlocking and communication systems

The Department performs and provides expert measurements and diagnostics of the equipment of interlocking and communication systems throughout the ŽSR infrastructure, by employees at the department’s workplaces in Spišská Nová Ves, Žilina and Bratislava.

The execution of the specified activities, their scope and conditions is based on the Authorization issued by the Transport Authority, pursuant to § 17 of the Act of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic No. 513/2009 Coll. on railways for ŽSR, Railway Research and Development Institute, Žilina.

Employees of the Railway research and development institute Žilina, Division of interlocking and communication systems, perform specified activities as professionally competent persons in accordance with the Certificates of Professional Competence, within the meaning of § 18 of the Act of the National Assembly of the Slovak Republic No.513/2009 Coll. on railways, which define the scope of their activities.

The Department provides and carries out the following activities:

  • complex diagnostics of operation, measurement, adjustment and commissioning of elements for detection of rolling stock (track circuits, axis counters, induction loops, ASE, point elements...)
    • measurements of the specific leakage admittance of track circuits,
    • measurement and time recording of asymmetry of reverse traction currents,
    • measurement of the condition of insulated joints,
    • measurement of track current along the entire length of the track circuit (determination of defective sleepers, incorrect track earthing, unwanted leakage, etc.),
    • inspection and diagnostics of existing track circuits, focusing on:
      • compliance of the connection of track circuits with applicable standards,
      • compliance of the connection with applicable technical documentation,
      • connection of traction and functional interconnections,
      • connection of the earthing of other components of railway technology,
      • condition of the ballast and insulated joints,

    • cooperation in solving operational problems and defects,
    • proposal for modification of the connection of existing track circuits,
    • cooperation in the design of new track circuits layouts and axis counters in the modifications/reconstruction of interlocking equipment.
  • installation and evaluation of black box records – long-term monitoring of the operation of interlocking equipment,
  • diagnostics of the track-bound part of the continuous train control system – diagnostics and measurement the signal quality of the track-bound part of the continuous train control system, with a specific focus on:
    • amplitude of the complete signal, the signal component with carrier frequency and the signal component with traction frequency,
    • waveforms of the complete signal, the carrier frequency signal and the traction asymmetry signal,
    • frequency spectrum of the complete signal,
    • signal designation,
    • switching frequency of the automatic train control and the pulse to period ratio,
    • setting the coding of the track-bound part of the continuous train control system (setting the value, frequency and waveform – pulse to period ratio of the coding current),
  • comprehensive diagnostics of battery systems (capacitance test, internal resistance measurement),
  • thermal imaging measurements of electrical equipment,
  • cooperation in modifications of existing interlocking equipment, proposals of possible solutions and their implementation in practice (modification of VÚD, PMR 7/85, switching off PZZ, etc.),
  • performing and evaluating operational verification of new elements, devices and components of interlocking and communication system in accordance with the instructions of O 450 DG ŽSR,
  • control measurements on measuring tables of signalling relays, issuing a protocol for certification,
  • expert measurements and diagnostics of communication equipment, cables and radio exchanges, namely fault and periodic measurements in accordance with the regulations of ŽSR /T 32 and T 35/, including analysis of the causes of faults,
  • acoustic measurements /noise, reverberation time, intelligibility and announcement level/ in the external and internal areas of the railway station, measurement of noise levels at the boundary of the ŽSR property,
  • control measurements of the axial luminosity of road warning device lights of the level crossing safety installation,
  • cooperates in the introduction of new interlocking and communication equipment,
  • carries out activities related to the assessment of the technical condition of interlocking and communication equipment during the investigation of accident events or when resolving disputes between the administrator and the service departments of the ŽSR, issues opinions on the technical condition of the equipment to safety inspectors and other inspection bodies,
  • performs or provides expert measurements and tests related to operational verification of new equipment or elements or solving specific problems arising during their normal operation, from the point of view of protection against electric shock,
  • prepares normative documents for new equipment, functional units or elements of the interlocking and communication systems,
  • assesses the technical documentation of new equipment and supervises the construction of new equipment in accordance with the instructions of DG ŽSR,
  • cooperates in defining requirements for acceptance and approval of electronic systems,
  • elaborates methodical procedures of electrotechnical tests and measurements, carries out tests and measurements, ensures the activity and further technical development of the low-voltage laboratory,
  • submits proposals for updating and cooperates in the development of the ŽSR service regulations for the sector of interlocking and communication systems, model letters, service manuals and monitors the issuance of authorization letters,
  • cooperates in the interpretation of the recommendations of the relevant standards,
  • draws up proposals for the implementation of UIC regulations on the ŽSR conditions,
